Living Conditions
 Those who decide to set up business in Antigua and Barbuda will enjoy a pleasant
and comfortable lifestyle.
Housing on the island is as good as Los Angeles or Florida in
the United States or the suburbs of greater London in the United
Kingdom. There are spectacular golf courses,
numerous tennis courts, a squash club and, of course, hundreds
of secluded beaches where a wide variety of water sports are available.
Cable television on the island provides several channels of US
television on a 24 hour-a-day basis. Excellent schools up to secondary
education level are also available.
Sport
A wide range of watersports can be enjoyed, including scuba diving,
jet and water skiing, windsurfing, parasailing
and sailboarding. Yacht charters, cruising and deep sea fishing are also available.
Cricket is the national game, and is played to the highest international
standard. The cricket season is between January and May, and matches
are played between the island’s leading teams. Inter-island
matches and international test cricket also take place here.
First-class golf courses can be found at Cedar Valley (18 holes)
Jolly Harbour and Half Moon Bay (9 holes). The Cedar Valley Gold
Club hosts an open golf tournament in March. There is also a 9-hole
golf course at the K-Club on Barbuda. Horse riding is available,
and is organised through some hotels.
Horse racing is also held at Cassada Gardens on most public holidays.
Squash courts and keep-fit centres are also to be found on the
island.

V.C. Bird International Airport
Facilities at VC Bird International Airport: restaurant and two bars, tourism
information desk, taxi stand, car rental agencies and duty free shops.
The regional airline LIAT provides scheduled flights several times daily from
V C Bird International to 25 Caribbean islands, including Barbuda. Day tours
to neighbouring islands are a special feature of LIAT and these can be easily
arranged. In addition, Carib Aviation and Norman Aviation, two airline charter
companies, offer day tours.
Banking Hours
Monday - Thursday: 0800-1500;
Friday: 0800-1300, 1500-1700;
Saturday: some banks open until midday.
Car Rental
Several international car rental companies are located at V C Bird International
Airport. A local drivers’ permit is obtainable on presentation of a valid
drivers’ licence and payment of a nominal fee. Driving is on the left.
Clothing
Light summer attire is suitable at all times. Some hotels and restaurants stipulate
jacket and tie for men and dresses for ladies in the evening. Swimsuits are
not recommended in the capital.
Communications
Global airmail service and courier services such as DHL and Federal Express.
Radio/television - local, regional and US broadcasts. Telephone in all hotels.
Long-distance direct calls or world-wide collect calls possible. Fax and telex
facilities are widely available on the island.
Currency
One Pound Sterling is roughly equal to four Eastern Caribbean dollars (EC$).
This rate fluctuates constantly, but the EC$ is fixed to the US$, and normally
exchanges at US$1 = EC$2.60. US$ travellers’ cheques and US$ notes accepted.
Credit cards: American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa. Eurocheques
are not widely accepted. US$ and £ Sterling may be changed at all banks
in St Johns, or exchanged at hotels and larger stores.
Departure Tax
Payable at airline check-in counter. EC$30/US$12.
Diplomatic Representation
There is a British Government Representative in Antigua, and consulates or
embassies for Germany, Venezuela, China, Denmark, France, Italy and the Netherlands
among others.
Duty Free Allowance
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250g tobacco, 1 litre wine or spirits, 170ml
(6oz) perfume. Prohibited items: weapons and unprescribed drugs.
Excursions
Organised boat trips and day tours by air to neighbouring islands and other
surrounding territories can be arranged, as can yacht and catamaran cruises.
Medical
There are several general practitioners and specialists on the island, a hospital
and a private clinic. No vaccinations are required unless the visitor is arriving
from an endemic area.
Night Life
There is a wide choice of restaurants and bars. Steelbands, combos and dancers
perform nightly at most hotels during the winter season. There are 5 casinos
on the island, and some hotels have their own discotheques, in addition to
a few night-clubs/discotheques located in and around St John’s.
Public Holidays
New Year’s Day (January 1), Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day (first
Monday in May), Whit Monday, Caricom Day (first Monday in July), Carnival (first
Monday and Tuesday in August), Independence Day (November 1), Christmas Day
and Boxing Day (December 25 and 26).
Shopping Tips
Special purchases include straw items, pottery, batik,
silk-screened printed fabrics, wood carvings and local paintings.
Duty-free purchases in St John’s include perfumes, a wide
variety of liquor including Antigua Cavalier Rum, jewellery,
English bone china, crystal and table linen.
Normal opening hours are 0830-1600, Monday to Friday (some stores
close between 1200 and 1300 daily). Most stores in St John’s
close at noon on Thursdays. Saturday: 0800-1200.

Taxis
Taxis available at V C Bird International Airport, at major hotels, and in
downtown St John’s. The Department of Tourism in Antigua may provide a
current taxi rate sheet.
Time Difference
Winter: UK time minus 4 hours. Summer: UK time minus 5 hours.
Voltage (Electrical)
220/110 volts AC; 60 cycles. Dual voltage appliances recommended. American-type
2-pin electrical sockets prevalent, and therefore a suitable adapter may be
required.
The London-based Antigua and Barbuda Tourist Office distributes brochures,
